On October 3, Carlos Gonzalez began his day as a pressure washing contractor but ended his day as a hero.
Carlos, owner of New Look Power Wash in Fairfield, California, was driving home after cleaning a San Francisco hotel when he noticed traffic was stopping ahead. It was raining heavily, and he could see a car that was “obviously” facing the wrong direction. “I thought it was just a spinout, but as I got closer I noticed a woman standing next the car holding her arm,” he explains.
No one else had stopped to help, so Carlos pulled over. “The woman walked very fast towards me and obviously had an arm injury,” he explains. By then, some other drivers stopped to help. Carlos instructed the woman to go sit in one of other vehicles that had stopped to assist. He told another individual to call 9-1-1.
However, there was a bigger problem. “There was fire billowing out under the hood of her car and heavy black smoke was pouring out,” he explains. He looked at the car and determined he might be able to put the fire out with his pressure washer.
He asked several people to stop traffic so he could back his Landa trailer up to get it within 150 feet of the fire. “I handed the Landa key to a gentleman and gave him instructions on what I wanted him to do relating to turning the pressure washer on,” he says. “I put on a ladder-saver nozzle, as I figured this would be my best bet to knock the fire down,” Carlos explains. “As I proceeded to apply water to the fire, a small explosion took place under the hood. I continued to apply the water up next to the car and eventually put the fire out.”
Shortly thereafter, the California Highway Patrol and fire department arrived. Both were extremely thankful to Carlos’ quick thinking and bravery. Carlos says he always tries to keep extra water in his tanks for instances like this, and to help drivers whose vehicles have overheated and need water for their radiators.
Carlos’ heroic efforts serve as a great example of how everyday pressure washing contractors give back every day.

Failed Sealant
Be careful thinking that pressure washing and resealing concrete will fix concrete like the one pictured here. This is a text book example of how old sealant fails and the quick and incorrect way of trying to fix it is to add more sealant. In this particular case, the homeowner repeatedly added sealant to the concrete in hopes that the newly applied sealant would cover up the failed sealant. For contractors and customers alike, we are faced with the multiple layers of sealant on stamped concrete and you never know which coat was the coat that actually failed. As stated earlier, home owners hire people that do not posses the knowledge or know how relating to the best remedy to situations poised in this particular blog.
Sealants fail for several reasons:
1. Inferior brand of sealant….customers opt to go “cheap” with watered down versions of sealant
2. The concrete was not cleaned or pressure washed properly in the first place. Normally stamped concrete has two colors. The last color is called the release color and it is usually applied in a powered form. When the concrete contractors cleaned the concrete or rinse away the excess release color they often times do a bad job. So…when the sealant is added it goes on the release vs. the actual concrete.
3. Concrete was not allowed to “cure”. After a concrete pour…it is standard to let the concrete “cure” for at least 30 days. Again, concrete contractors sometimes do not wait for proper curing. When they seal the concrete, there is still moisture in the concrete itself and eventually it rises to the top. Again, when this happens the moisture is “trapped” at between the concrete surface and the layer of sealant. Naturally it evaporates overtime BUT it leaves calcium deposits. This is where you see blotches on stamped concrete.
So….your situation could be one of many scenarios that I briefly described above if you, the homeowner, has this type of problem with your stamped or colored concrete.
If you are a contractor being asked to remedy this for a home owner, try to find out how many times the concrete was sealed or how many coats of sealant was applied. This will assist you in determining the correct course of action to remedy the white blotches or failed sealant that is a common place in our line or work.

Do YOU Pressure Wash Your Building?
Pressure washing your building on a regular basis improves the overall “curb appeal” that encourages customers to get out of their car and patronize your business. If you have dirty sidewalks or the building is noticeably dirty on the outside it sends the message to a potential customer that the you have little regard of what you are selling. Regular pressure wash services can eliminate this problem for you. Getting customers to spend money at your business is the formula for success. A clean building with clean sidewalks attracts customers!
Investing in the upkeep of your business must be one of the focal points in customer retention. Commercial real estate is still the largest financial investment a business owner will make. As with other business owners then you know that keeping your business, sidewalks, dumpster pads, drive thrus, shopping carts and man more “items” cleaned on a regular basis is as important as the actual product or service YOU are selling.
Pressure washing your building to include the sidewalks, when done correctly by a professional house cleaning company, is an extremely good value considering the increased value these services bring to your business.
Pressure washing also saves you a considerable amount of money by stopping the damaging effects of dirt, grit, grime, mold, and mildew which will cause rot and decay of the building itself.
Businesses in Solano County and Contra Costa County are all vulnerable (Walnut Creek, Concord, Lafayette, Fairfield, Martinez, Benicia, Suisun City, Rio Vista, Richmond, Hercules, Vallejo,) to algae growth on their buildings and concrete due to the ocean moisture from the bay.
These natural and manmade contaminants, when ignored season after season, can cause costly future repairs, needless renovations, and frequently result in complete replacement of building materials. All of this can easily be avoided by having your building pressure washed regularly by a professional pressure wash company.
Creating a yearly pressure wash cleaning budget for your property is a smart way to engage in preventative maintenance, which will help you avoid expensive and unnecessary future repairs.

New Look Power Wash, www.newlookpowerwash.com a San Francisco Bay Area privately held pressure wash company has recently announced the expansion of their commercial pressure wash servicesto include the Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Reno and Arizona markets. Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, New Look Power Wash provides ongoing pressure wash services to gas stations, fast food restaurants, property managers and business owners all through the state of California. Pressure washing sidewalks, dumpster pads, drive thru’s and gas station pads are but only a few of the unique services that New Look Power Wash offers to it’s many clientele. “Expanding into these other regions in a formal fashion like Vegas and L.A. was the next logically step for our company” explained Carlos Gonzales, owner of New Look Power Wash. “Many of our current clients have locations in these regions and in many cases we were asked to service them along with our Northern California contracts”. “When this opportunity presented itself, I had no hesitation in making it work for us but more importantly for our clients”, he further explained.
With this expansion, clients of New Look Power Wash are assured that their facilities will be pressure washed and maintained with the highest standards within the pressure wash industry. New Look Power Wash uses only “Environmentally Friendly” soaps for their pressure washing. In conjunction with this, New Look Power Wash handles all the logistics of scheduling and planning for clients wishing to have multiple locations cleaned within the different cities New Look Power Wash services. “We have a great rapport with not only our contact person at corporate but also with each manager and assistant manager of every facility that we wash. They know who we are and know we will do a great job for them”, Carlos said.
New Look Power Wash is analyzing the commercial market trends in which Carlos firmly believes that the economy is rebounding. “Los Angeles and San Francisco has maintained their growth over the years in the commercial sector. A few years ago people counted Las Vegas out due to the economy but what we have seen is that even though Vegas was hit hard, there are positive signs surfacing that Vegas is rebounding. Occupancy in commercial buildings are starting to spike and anchor tenants are signing long term leases again” he said. New Look Power Wash has and will continue to invest within so that the company’s infrastructure or systems will continue to accommodate the demand for their pressure wash services.##

Pressure Wash in San Francisco
If there were one or two favorite places in your service area that you thoroughly enjoy pressure washing at, where would it be?
For my company, New Look Power Wash, I would have to say that no matter what time of day or night it is we enjoy the sights and sounds of pressure washing in San Francisco and also Las Vegas. To be blunt about this, how cool is it to pressure wash in the world’s most traveled vacation destinations like San Francisco? In early December, we had the opportunity to pressure wash right on the San Francisco Embarcadero that had the San Francisco Bay Bridge as a perfect background. Our client, which so happened to be a very well known and upscale athletic club, offered the perfect venue for our company to soak in the sights and sounds of tourist visiting the City By The Bay! The famous Lombard Street and its surrounding streets has also been a delightful opportunity for our pressure washing company to take in the views as we performed our washing services to both residential and commercial clients.
Our business has put us in different parts of San Francisco repeatedly over this past year and every time we are given the opportunity to pressure wash there we take advantage of the trip. Whether we find ourselves in the Mission District or near Civic Center we appreciate the time spent in this great city called San Francisco helping our customers beautify their properties.
I have wrote about this before but will mention it again here, pressure washing and the opportunities to visit and work in some of the most unique parts of the United States sometimes supersedes any payday one could ask for. I encourage all pressure wash contractors to take many pictures and videos of that special view or unique photo op while washing. 10 years from now it would not hurt to get out this pictures and videos to cherish the good times as a pressure washing contractor.
Pressure Wash service areas include San Francisco, Oakland, Pleasanton, Emeryville, Richmond, San Pablo, Hercules, Vallejo, Petaluma, El Cerrito, Folsom, Lafayette, Cathedral City, Clayton, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Fairfield, Vacaville, Dixon, Winters, Davis, Sacramento, West Sacramento, Suisun City, Stockton, Pittsburgh, Pleasant Hill, St. Helena, Walnut Creek, Oakley, Benicia, Danville, San Ramon, American Canyon, Orinda, Berkeley, Napa, San Rafael, Petaluma, South San Francisco, Rancho Cordova, San Pablo, El Sobrante, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Concord, Lodi, Stanford, Monterey, Bodega Bay, Carmel, Redding, Livermore, Fremont, Fresno, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Riverside, Modesto, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, Hayward, Elk Grove, Sunnyvale, Visalia, Roseville, Daly City, Antioch, San Mateo, Clovis, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Alhambra, Chico, Citrus Heights, Livermore, Alameda, San Leandro, Calistoga, Campbell, Tracy, Merced, Atherton, Auburn, Belmont, Belvedere, Brentwood, Brisbane, Burlingame, Albany, Point Richmond, Rio Vista, San Jose, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Mill Valley, Burbank, Palo Alto, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Hayward, Rancho Cordova, Los Banos, San Diego, Long Beach, Orange County, Contra Costa County, Solano County, Alameda County and Napa County.
So you are finally looking for a qualified pressure wash contractor to perform the necessary task of applying his or her knowledge to provide pressure washing services to your house or place of business?
The likely hood that your house, building or sidewalks are pretty dirty right now and you need to get them clean, right? Customer often wait until the outside of their building or house is either covered with algae or the dirt has accumulated so much over the years that the building itself has turned into an eyesore.
As with every significant purchase you make for the upkeep of your property you will want to make sure that the pressure washing contractor that you hire has the necessary credentials that ultimately qualify them as a legitimate pressure washing contractor. Beyond the business license and proof of insurance you will want to make sure that the contractor has an acute understanding of what needs to be cleaned and how it will be cleaned.
It has been my experience over the years regardless of the locale i.e. Napa, San Francisco, Berkeley, Sacramento, Los Angeles or San Diego that the consumer has little knowledge if any of what we as pressure washing contractors really do. One particular customer in Walnut Creek made a comment that all I do is play in water all day long. I guess one could surmise that this is indeed true however there is many ‘things’ that we do in order to ensure that our pressure washing services are the best in California.
Picking the right contractor to perform the pressure wash services you desire can be difficult when you do not know what questions you need to ask. As mentioned before at minimum you want to make sure that the “pressure wash” contractor is truly a legitimate pressure washing business in the first place. As a consumer you will want to make sure that the contractor does indeed have a business license and most importantly carry the correct and enough insurance that specifically covers pressure washing as part of their company policy. Pressure wash contractors that do have the necessary credentials often proudly display them on their website. In our case, New Look Power Wash is fully insured and a pressure wash vendor for the County of Solano, the City of Fairfield and the State of California. In conjunction with this we are also a certified Small Business with the State of California. Often times other trades that claim they perform pressure washing services do indeed have insurance and will tell you that BUT the may not be insured for pressure washing.
Questions to Ask
Once you have found a few legitimate pressure wash companies to bid on your project, don’t be afraid to ask them exactly how they intend to clean and remove all the dirt and algae from your residence or place of business without damaging the actual surface. Here are a few questions to ask as you try to decide which company you will hire:
- What procedures do you use to clean?
- Do you use cold or hot water when you pressure wash?
- Do you use any soap? If so, ask for the MSDS sheet for it so that you may read exactly what they are putting on your building or sidewalks
- Will the soap hurt my plants?
- Will the algae reappear?
- What equipment will you use to clean my back patio or sidewalks?
- Can the contractor guarantee that they will be able to get the surface clean?
- Ask for references if you wish to speak to another consumer about the contractors work.
These questions along with some that you may come up with will hopefully enable you to make the right choice in hiring a pressure wash contractor. As you are interviewing the pressure wash company determine which company you feel will back their services up unconditionally should something go wrong on the job.
The Almighty Dollar
Pricing does play an important role if not the deciding role in determining who you hire to perform the services. However do not let pricing be the only reason you choose one contractor from the next one. Qualified contractors charge for their services because they have spent many years testing what works and does not work on different surfaces relating to pressure washing. Entering into the pressure wash industry as a contractor is relatively easy but being a qualified contractor does require knowledge and experience in the field of pressure washing to properly perform the services the correct way.
Pressure Wash service areas include San Francisco, Oakland, Pleasanton, Emeryville, Richmond, San Pablo, Hercules, Vallejo, Petaluma, El Cerrito, Folsom, Lafayette, Cathedral City, Clayton, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Fairfield, Vacaville, Dixon, Winters, Davis, Sacramento, West Sacramento, Suisun City, Stockton, Pittsburgh, Pleasant Hill, St. Helena, Walnut Creek, Oakley, Benicia, Danville, San Ramon, American Canyon, Orinda, Berkeley, Napa, San Rafael, Petaluma, South San Francisco, Rancho Cordova, San Pablo, El Sobrante, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Concord, Lodi, Stanford, Monterey, Bodega Bay, Carmel, Redding, Livermore, Fremont, Fresno, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Riverside, Modesto, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, Hayward, Elk Grove, Sunnyvale, Visalia, Roseville, Daly City, Antioch, San Mateo, Clovis, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Alhambra, Chico, Citrus Heights, Livermore, Alameda, San Leandro, Calistoga, Campbell, Tracy, Merced, Atherton, Auburn, Belmont, Belvedere, Brentwood, Brisbane, Burlingame, Albany, Point Richmond, Rio Vista, San Jose, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Mill Valley, Burbank, Palo Alto, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Hayward, Rancho Cordova, Los Banos, San Diego, Long Beach, Orange County, Contra Costa County, Solano County, Alameda County and Napa County

Pressure Wash Safety in the workplace
Over the last couple of months, the pressure washing and window washing industry has witnessed several on and off site accidents in which several of our colleagues either have been seriously injured or in one instance death occurred.
As I began the last leg of my flight from Houston recently, I began to think about on site safety and whether or not we as business owners had anything “Safety” related as part of our “infrastructure” make up for our business.
It is common for any industry that when there is reports of higher than normal injuries people begin to ask the question of what is going on? I think it is fair game to ask that same question today as it relates to the pressure washing and window washing industry. Just off the top of my head I am aware of 4 accidents that has happened in the last 5 months in which one of those resulted in death i.e. window washer in Orinda, CA, a Northern California community, which our company offers pressure washing services.
Human error is often to be blamed for the reasons why individuals get hurt on the job site. As a business owner, whether you are a sole proprietor or a corporation, you have an obligation to ensure that your employees and you remain abreast and up to date with a current and correct safety plan.
Safety plans and safety meetings must be part of your operational routine. Some questions to ponder as you evaluate your safety guidelines:
- Do your employees wear safety glasses?
- Do your employees wear ear protection while the rig is operating?
- How many safety cones do you own?
- When you are night washing do you wear reflective gear?
- Are ladders being “footed” by a second person during window cleaning?
- What is the expected “Safe Zone” in footage around your pressure washing rig and vehicle?
- What if any safety considerations do you implement regarding the general public?
- Do you have a First Aid Kit?
- Where is your Fire Extinguisher located at?
- MSDS Sheets have instructions for First Aid cares for all chemicals should you need it. Is your MSDS Sheets sitting in your garage on a shelf somewhere?
- Are you or anyone in your company certified in First Aid?
These questions and many, many more are the type of question we all should constantly ask as we tighten our belt regarding safety awareness.
Until then . . . Be Safe!
